My wife and I along with our two children ages 7 and 17 are planning on taking this train to Venice. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
When are you taking this trip? The timetables on the German Rail site only show the direct Paris-Venice night train running through 1 May. After that the timetables show that it would be necessary to take the direct Paris-Rome night train as far as Bologna and connect there to a regional train to Venezia Santa Lucia. If you book all four bunks in a four-person couchette on the night train, you'll have the couchette all to yourselves.
In addition to the advice Tim has given you, you might want to examine the superb website run by the "Man in seat 61". His site has pictures and extensive descriptions of the Artesia Night service. The link below should get you to the right page http://www.seat61.com/Italy.htm#London%20to%20Venice,%20Verona,%20Milan,%20Turin
My family would like to do the same trip this summer. I am concerned about the post regarding the cancellation of the sleeper train after May 1st. Have you confirmed this because I have not been able to as of yet. Thanks...
