Can anyone recommend an inexpensive place to stay in the heart of the town,and suggestions for a quick evening flavor of amsterdam.

i think the cheapest you'll end up getting is about $20. I would recommend staying in the Red Light District to get the best feel of amsterdam.. Flying Pig, i have been told is a good time(as in a party place).. so you would get a good sense of amsterdam flavor staying in that area. If you want a little bit of a more quiet place, Rick recommends The Shelter City, which is in the same district.
