Hi wonderfully helpful people! I am a student currently studying in Arles. My friends and I would love to visit Italy, anywhere in Italy really (Though we've heard great things about Cinque Terre!) The problem is we're on a very tight budget and really the only weekend we can go is July 21-22. We're young and energetic and would be willing to do a whirlwind trip by plane or train or bus. We just want to get there without emptying our bank accounts.
Any suggestions?
If you are currently in Arles the best thing to do would be to go to a travel agent there. They will have far more information than you can get here.
This is a tough one. By train, it will take you close to 4.0hrs to get to the Italian border and another 4+ hours to get to Monterosso in the CT from the NW Italian border with France. Leaving on the 5:59 train from Arles, you could be in the CT at 2:45pm. Round trip fare for the French leg is approximately 88Euro. Round trip for the Italian leg is approximately 34Euro. Finally, I hope you have a place to stay in the CT. The middle of July is a very busy time.
