Are you dressing with respect?

Evidently the dept. of transportation has said that travelers should get back to the "golden age" of flying where everyone dressed up and treated others with respect. The Golden Age of Travel Starts With You (unlocked)

I'm all about treating others with respect but I'm not sure that I want to go back to the age of dressing up. I like my comfortable clothes when I'm flying and the only way I would start dressing up again is if the airlines gave me more comfortable seats so that I could lounge in my upscale clothes. Otherwise I'm sticking with comfort wear. What about you?

I don’t care what people wear on a plane as long as it covers the “key parts” and doesn’t have vulgar or offensive writing on it. I am way more concerned about how they behave!

Those dress up days are gone. When I tell my grandchildren we used to put our best clothes on if we were going to take the bus downtown, they look at me like I am a creature from outer space.

I agree with Mardee and Carol now retired. It’s kind of silly to tell people to dress up for travel when people don’t dress up for much of anything any more. Even for funerals - at funerals I’ve been to the last few years the only men wearing suit and tie have been well over a certain age. And I remember going downtown to shop with my mother and aunts - all wearing hats and gloves. (I’m not lamenting the change to more casual dress, just noticing it - I don’t much like to dress up either. Lol)

Ummm…I think he needs to talk to a different audience about getting back to treating others with respect.

But, yes, we all need to put ourselves in the shoes of others, especially when flying with sometimes hundreds of people. I don’t really care what people wear as long as they are kind and respectful to each other and the flight crew.

Yes! In terms of respect, there are far better areas for concentration than air travel passengers. But, sticking with air travel. The airlines have made it so bloody uncomfortable and onerous, that people have to develop so many hacks just to survive. I need to dress for comfort and for flexibility so I can climb over fellow passengers and sit in my tiny area. I need to wear something that washes easily and dries quickly, because whatever I wear needs to be washed before I can use it for my travels.

And respect, maybe lets start with TSA staff. I would have to say that staff at the Minneapolis airport are typically "Minnesota Nice". But, I've encountered some nasty staff in Seattle, Boston, JFK, Atlanta, and Kauai.

Mardee: Dress with respect?!
I’d have to buy a whole new wardrobe.
I think this is your most expensive “subtle” suggestion for new clothes. 😊😂
I flew to college from Hawaii to the “mainland”during “the golden age.”
I wore “business casual” attire: skirt, blouse, and jacket….and nylons, of course.
I shudder to think of wearing an outfit like that on a plane today.
Thanks for gifting another fun article

Hahahahaha!!! Carol, I am definitely not enabling here! I am sticking with my ratty old comfort wear and I will not be buying new clothes just so the dept of transportation can take us back to the 50s! 😂 😂 😂

When I tell my grandchildren we used to put our best clothes on if we were going to take the bus downtown, they look at me like I am a creature from outer space.

Carol NR, yep, that's the same with me. I found there are even words I can't even say anymore, like "grade school." Did you know that it's not called grade school anymore? It's elementary school, and no one their age knows what a grade school is. And I definitely remember my mom making us wear dresses when we went out shopping. I'm so glad those days are gone. 😂

Shower, yes. And I'm ok with people taking theirs shoes off on long flights if they are wearing clean socks and odor free shoes. Also, please don't gross me out by using the restrooms barefoot or in socks. (I need the vomit emoji)

I don't know. I can understand wanting to be comfortable when flying - after all spending up to 14 hours (as on my recent trip to Japan) is not the most enjoyable thing to do and comfy clothes do help make it more pleasant.

On the other hand, airport and airplane behavior seems pretty poor and often inconsiderate and treating others with respect should be the norm. I left Japan on a clean plane with carefully dressed crew and arrived in the US at a dirty airport with behaviors that are just rude. I went into a sort of culture shock.

People putting their feet on chairs, people putting the bags that they had on the floor onto a table to hold it ignoring that people might want to eat at that table, people taking their breakfast into the toilet (bleah) and leaving the plane with garbage all over the floor and seats. Never mind the super loud phone conversations and other poor behavior. And cutting in line to get ahead of others.

On a domestic trip in Japan, the person in front of me actually turned around to ask me if it was okay if he could recline his seat - that kind of courteous behavior doesn't seem common in my part of the world for sure. And queue jumping is definitely not the norm.

For the record, I typically dress casually - pressed slacks and nice shirt with comfy shoes which I find works for me - but I perfectly understand others wanting to be as comfortable as possible and what works for me may not work for others. However, unkempt and dirty - not so much - don't really get that. And, disclaimer, I am sort of an old fogie so I guess that colors my views.

Jules, when I was reading the comments in that article, someone mentioned seeing a passenger manipulating the touch buttons on his screen with his toes. That just made me shudder... 🤮

”Mr. Duffy’s video included many of these clips, including one where a passenger scrolls through a flight’s entertainment options on a screen using their toes.”

Ewww! That’s a reason to wear the white gloves during a flight & throw them away as you exit the plane - gross!

I agree with others above - civility & respect is a “yes”, but I am not wearing a dress on a plane. And yes, I am old enough to remember that when we drove from my small hometown to Omaha to shop for clothes 2-3 times a year, we wore dresses because it was a special event and others were dressed up in the Brandeis Dept Store, too. Riding the escalators up several flights….good memories!

Mardee, I see we were typing at the same time with the same thoughts for that touchscreen. Mine is getting wiped down on these upcoming flights!

Mardee-- The time we took my mom to France, we had the most disgusting experience on the flight home. It was one of those huge planes that had an upper level, and our seats were up there. There was sort of a ledge along the wall of windows. I was in the window seat and the French lady behind me put her bare feet up on that ledge, into my space! I can still picture it and it still grosses me out. At first I gently nudged her feet with my elbow, but that didn't stop it. I turned and asked her to put her feet down and I got the deer in the headlights look, and she did not stop. So I basically shoved her feet out of the way and blocked that ledge. This was a grown woman, maybe 40ish, and basically a social clod. My mom was a stickler for manners, and I thought she was going to come unglued over the situation.

"civility & respect is a “yes”"

Uh, no.

This time is not that. You can argue about why but for this administration to say that is laughable. And not in a fun way.

I think it is possible to dress comfortably and respectfully at the same time. You cannot underestimate what some people will choose to wear in public.

Mardee what a fun post!

I used to wear a top hat and tails but then I heard Ryanair charges 50 euros per tail and 100 euros per top hat so, yeah, I’ve switched to wearing a bathrobe like the Big Lewbowski because nothing says respect more than the Dude.

Happy travels

Thanks Mardee!

Oh my word....double yuck to the touch screens and bare toes. Yikes. Yes, I am one who carried Wet Ones and wipes everything down before I touch anything. I get the individually wrapped ones at Walmart...more waste but they are so handy to have.

Interesting that the article says "It chastised fliers for forgetting to say “please” and “thank you” and for not helping older or pregnant passengers put their bags in the overhead bins.". I've done a number of flights over the last few years on Delta One with a few Economy comfort segments thrown in there. Invariably in Delta One a male passenger will offer to help me put my bag in the overhead bin or to take it down for me. I am grateful for that but always say...I try to pack so I can manage it. Let me try and if I have problems I'll take you up on your offer. NEVER in Economy comfort has anyone ever offered. NOT that I need it, but there is a contrast here. Maybe it's because there isn't such a scrum in the Delta One cabin and everyone knows they have dedicated bin space?

In the 80's a good friend owned a travel agency and was often offered "fam trips". Occasionally, If her husband didn't want to go I was invited. We did dress up for those flights, wearing what passed for business casual although she was a stickler that we had to have tie shoes on so we could run if there was an emergency.
