Flying JFK to Zurich on Swiss in Jan. Can I carry-on my 21 inch bag and a backpack?
Hey Bob,
The best way to find out this info is to check:
www.swiss.com/web/EN/services/baggage/Pages/baggage_overview.aspx
and/or call the Swiss toll free phone # and ask. Only sure way to know what's allowed.
Paul
For 2nd class carry-on, you are limited to 1 bag not to exceed 8kg (17.6lbs). You also have a size limitation of 55x40x20 centimeters (1'9.65" x 1'3.74" x 7.87"). For business and 1st class, you can carry on two bags that meet the description above. You still permitted to bring on small items like purses, umbrellas, coats, etc. The site strangely did not list separate laptops. For Checked Baggage - 2nd class, not to exceed 23kg (50.6lbs) and a L-W-H total of 158cm. Business class and 1st class are not to exceed 32kg (70.4lbs) and the same dimensions as 2nd class. Says so on the Swiss Air website. This is similar to Lufthansa who owns Swiss Air.
Thanks Paul and Larry,
I have always brought a larger bag and checked it.
Last month I bought a RS carry-on bag and will try to get 3 wks worth in it on my trip to CH.

I just got back from a 2 week trip to CH wis Swiss - on the way over i had my RS_bag (under 8kg) and all the other heavy camera and cable and books in my day pack (Northface). I took both as carry on since the northface bak pack was my "personal item" - computer gear etc. On the way back I had lots more than 8kg - choclate etc - and checked, but it was direct non-stop so I didnt bother sending anythinghome via mail like I usually do to keep "all carry on!"
But if you dont over stuff your RS bag - it will be fine - just keep under 8kg - (they didnt ask but I was ready!)
Thanks Tom,
I would like to ship my sky gear ahead to CH. Whats your exp with carrier cost and delivery times?
shipping is quite expensive from Euro to here - In germany I paid about 30-40$ for 5-10kg, norway was about 45-50$ for 10kg or less, and swiss mail is probably somewhere in between. DHL or Fedex or UPS are quite expensive - but if you have time to ship it to someone - try USPS - check online with their estimator for CH-bound packages. If you have multiple stops - might be best way although $$ - if you have direct - you may be fine throuing a small duffel into luggage - and keep yoru RS&Back-pack onboard! No liquids that way either!
