Anyone flown Austrian Airlines recently?

I'm flying JFK to Vienna in a couple of weeks, and went onto the Austrian Airlines website to find their carry-on policy--yikes! From the website, it looks like you can carry on only one item, plus a "pocket sized wallet or purse" and "glasses or sunglasses without a case." I plan to carry a "personal item" containing my computer, but I'd hate to do that if it meant checking the "main" carryon.

So...are they really not allowing a second item other than a wallet-sized item? Anybody know?

We flew them in May on the YYZ-VIE route. However, we checked our main bags and only carried backpacks and one rollon with our emergency clothes/items. The folks at the checkin counter insisted on weighing each and every carry on and made us transfer stuff from the rollon to the backpacks to get each carryon item under 9 kgs? (sorry - can't remeber exact weight limitation).

I can't be sure whether these were OS restrictions or whether this was just the airport's policy. All the folks doing the check in were contract folks and not OS personnel given they only have 1 flt a day from Toronto.

Why guess about luggage requirements. Call the Austrian Airlines. Or fax your questions.

(404) 240-0949 phone
(800) 790-4682 toll-free
(404) 240-0948 fax

They should answer your questions quickly and accurately.

I would assume that if they set those rules, they intend to have their staff follow them. You MAY get a sympathetic crew, but I wouldn't bet on it. Any call or e-mail to the airline is just going to elicit the official line in response.

OK--then I guess I'll leave the glasses case at home.

Interestingly, there's nothing at all on the website about weight--only the size of the carry-on.

And, having just now called the airline numbers, there's no way apparently to get general information there. They just have a recording referring you back to the website or to a set of extensions that put you on voice mail for folks who apparently want to sell you a package holiday. If this is any indication of the customer service at Austrian Air, something tells me that this will be my last time flying them.

Oops--those numbers are just for package vacations. So I called the regular information nubmer and was told 1 main carry-on with a maximum 45 inches in all three dimensions, at 18 pounds maximum, and a purse or laptop case. Nothing about glasses cases... ;-)

In other words, pretty standard, as it turns out. But not what the website is saying. I think I had better email so I can get a printed confirmation of their policy.

JER....great you clarified that....but I see no reference to "glasses case" or "pocket-sized wallet" on the Austrian airlines website. Maybe their wallets are big in Austria ;)

Here's the information I was referring to, under "Security and Service Standards at Check In" under "Check In":

Security and service standards at Check In

Flights to USA and Flights from or via U.K.

Due to increased security measures for flights to/from US passengers are allowed to take one piece of hand baggage (not exceeding 55x40x23cm) on board an aircraft.

You may bring along on board:

pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus content, travel documents (passport, tickets), personal medical supplies required for the flight as well as prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger´s ticket, essential other non-prescription medicines not exceeding 120ml per container, liquids or gels for diabetic passengers who indicate a need for such items to address their medical condition (up to 148ml per container), spectacles and sun glasses without cases, contact lens holders, neutral salt solution, sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, keys (no electronical key supplies), food and milk for babies and small children as well as solid foods (also fruits, sweets, except foodstuff in tubes) and solid cosmetics.

Oh, OK....so those are examples of items you can bring on. Your first reference seemed to indicate that ALL you could bring on as a second item was a "wallet" or "purse!" :) You'll have to PM me the link, since I still can't find it on the Austrian Airlines website.
