Anyone concerned about budget airlines?

I'm planning next year's trip, and am getting a bit nervous about the viability of the low cost airlines. In recent years, we've counted on taking super-low fares to distant places in preference to taking long train rides, but I can't believe that this model of airfare is going to continue to be viable. Already there are flight cancellations by Easyjet and Ryan Air. So...is the heydey of "fly rather than overnight train" over?

We're going via Amsterdam next year and will be touring aroung the Benelux corridor, but we were thinking about a side trip to Krakow via a discount airline. Still a reasonable option?

I worry as much about the fate of the traditional airlines... they are all seriously bleeding red ink. At least the "budget" airlines have a business model that's based on them keeping thier costs to a minimum.

I haven't been hearing about any cancellations at EasyJet...and I'm planning to use them in the fall... how much have they been cutting? Link?

Worldwide over 20 airlines have gone out of business since the beginning of the year. Almost all them discount airlines.
Airlines make their profits from business travelers who typically book at the last minute and pay full fare. Discount airlines cater mostly to leisure travelers (most of their routes aren't designed for business travel)and if there is a downturn in the economy and folks travel less by air for vacations, its the discounts airlines that suffer the most.

According to their figures Ryanair are pretty stabil. Personally, however, I wouldn't buy a low cost carrier ticket much longer than 6 months ahead of time just to be on the same side. It's being rough for all airlines, no matter of whether they're traditional or no frills.

I just read Ryan Air is cutting back some routes...........so ..........I'd be inclined to follow the headlines on the airline websites for awhile..........and make plans 4-months out.......

It is the traditional airlines that are the dinosaurs, not the budget ones. Heck Southwest Airlines, despite record high fuel costs, even made a small profit last quarter. The budget airlines do one thing and do it well.

Ryanair announced a huge loss today but is still lowering ticket prices to keep passenger loads up. The stock also took a tumble.

However, I doubt it will go out of business too soon. Just look for more "additional" charges.

As far as Southwest is concerned, they gambled with oil futures and won. So, they are paying less for fuel than anyone else thus showing a profit.

Air berlin, on the other hand, may be in trouble. Too soon to tell.
