Anyone been able to contact United refund department directly?

I cancelled my flight to France with a United agent on 4/23/20 due to major reroute. I received an electronic certificate for future booking but did not receive a refund for Economy Plus upgrade which I was supposed to get. I checked on the refund status with an agent in May and was assured the request had been made to the refund department. I checked again 6/1. This agent said no request was in the computer. He put the request in again (supposedly) but this will take 21 business days. So now after over 5 weeks I am starting over.

I asked for a phone number for the refund department. The agent could not give it. He said he would transfer me and it would probably be a 2 hour wait to speak to someone. He then transferred and the call was dropped. He had also said the refund department cannot be e-mailed. I could do an on-line request for the refund but it would be a duplicate of what the agent was supposed to do and would be treated as a new request

As it’s now been almost 6 weeks since the cancellation I don’t think I should have to start over. Has anyone been able to speak DIRECTLY to the Refund department? If so how? I have no trouble using United’s general number to get an agent but they cannot do refunds, just requests to the department that does.

Thanks for any help

I did the online request for a refund at the direction of the United agent. The advantage of the online process is you get a claim number. After weeks of waiting, I filed a disputed charge with my credit card company. Refund received in days.

Since your are starting over, start over. If UA made a substantial change you should be entitled to a refund, much preferred to a credit. Then it should be one transaction. We did this. First to hit my credit card was the Economy Plus upgrades. When I did not see the airfare in 3 weeks I called and my request was not in the system. Received the refund a few weeks after that call.

Thanks for the replys. Today I called and was transferred to the Refund Department. Listened to United’s music for 1 hour without actually knowing if I was in the waiting line or not. Refund agent said she would process the seat upgrade refund since I had already waited 6 weeks. Supposed to get in a few days. I did ask if I could change the electronic certificate to a refund. She said no. Maybe not true but I don’t have the energy to fight it. The certificate is valid until May 2022 so hopefully it will be honored.
