Family of four/young-adult kids...limited time & want to get from family wedding in Antwerp to Rome. Is a full day on TGV too much...tooo long a day? Where should we make an interesting & safe over-nighy stop?
It looks like an 18.5hr train ride. One other option is to take the train to Brussels in about an hour and fly to Rome on http://www.brusselsairlines.com/com/. If you book early, you can do this for 79Euro. Pack light and read the luggage restrictions carefully.
There is a run that includes night trains that goes from Antwerp to Rome. You depart at 16.28 and go to Paris where you pick up the Paris/Venice sleeper. You get off at Milan and get on the Paris to Milan. At Milan, you transfer to a Eurostar for the remaining ride to Rome. This trip arrives in Rome at 9:45am and takes 17.5hrs.
