Another Trenitalia website question

When trying to make my ticket purchase on the Trenitalia website I entered my CC number, expiration, then they have a box labeled: CVV2/XXXX/XXXX (can't remember what the other series of letters were) with a * saying Visa/MC required field. I put in my 3 digit security code from the back figuring that was the only other thing they could be requesting, but it didn't work. Do you know what that field should be or what that means? I've never seen that before.

Lauren: I don't think we've had anyone report here that they've been able to get an American credit card to work on the Trenitalia website in some time. Here's a big discussion of the problem: Trenitalia website problems

I don't want to rub it in but I've booked twice on Trenitalia's website and had no issues, went through perfectly. As you can tell if you have looked at the other thread, that many people possible because they are American credit cards just are not working. I am not sure if its because I have a Canadian credit card but I have never had a problem. I do want to assure you though I have been to Italy twice both in May and never had a full train. Depending on where you are traveling you will be fine if you wait and buy your tickets there.

I booked using an American CC fairly recently so I can't tell you what's going on...

Thanks for the confirmation about the field wanting my security code. I guess it's like the other thread indicates -- the site can be capricious.

And I was feeling so cocky, too, since First Great Western in UK and SNCF didn't pose any problem for website purchases with my US MasterCard.

Fortunately, the difference in price between Amica and regular fares on Trenitalia isn't as great as the other countries.

Could we get some information about the types of credit cards that work vs the types that don't? Is it a difference between Visa, Mastercard, Amex or is the company behind those cards...Capital One WaMu, etc. Give us some information.

CVV2 is the security code on the back of your credit card (3 digits for Visa, others ?). You usually see xxxx/xxxx etc then the last 4 digits of the credit card number you entered. That being said: I have no idea why your card didn't work.

I've used a visa card issued by my credit union successfully on Trenitalia's website.
