Amsterdam to Munich

I'm traveling from Amsterdam to Munich in September for the start of Octoberfest. I'm wondering if it would better to travel by air or train? The night train is already sold out from what I can tell.

By rail it's a 7.5 hour journey with a change in Frankfurt. You can get advance non-refundale/non-changeable fare for about 39 euros. By air its 90 minutes. There are no discount airlines that do this route, but you can get a RT trip ticket from Lufthansa for $123USD and throw away the unused portion.

Is it an option to go by train and make a stop or two on the way? The leg lends itself well to a day and night in the Rhine Valley and a stop in Koln.

What date do you wish to travel? I went to www.bahn.de and found that not only were there tickets available for the night train for the date I entered near the beginning of Oktoberfest, even discount fares were still available.

It seems Chris didn't know about the DB site and used the Rail Europe site instead. Rail Europe quoted him $320 one-way from Amsterdam to Munich on a daytime train!!!!! I told him about DB and the advance fare of 39 euros.

Sorry Rail Europe....not!
