I will be in amsterdam next summer for a few days and after that I will be heading to London. What would be best to take a flight to London or take the train? I was just looking for some info.
Thanks
kira
It's cheaper and faster to fly. Check the easyjet.com website for cheap fares. Easyjet uses three London area airports on this route. Even though it will cost a little bit more, use the Gatwick flights. It's much easier to get to Central London via Gatwick.
Define best? Cheapest? Fastest? Or one most memorable. Plane probably for the first two but it is an opportunity to say you took the Chunnel Train (20 minutes of darkness).
Actually, by the time you factor in all the lines & hassles & getting to and from an airport, the train is probably faster. It's less than 3 hours to Paris from London.
And you can get good deals on the train if you book well ahead of time.

Kira was asking about travel from Amsterdam to London, not Paris to London. Traveling by train will take about 7 hours. Flight time between Schipol and London is under 1 hour. Even when you factor in the usual airport hassles you're still saving time flying.
If your main concern is cost then it's possible to fly from AMS to LHR for approx $80.00 ( at todays exchange rate ) and over half of that is taxes. It takes about an hour and that means that by using the train to get from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Schipol and through security at both airports and the tube into central London you can do the whole thing point to point in less than five hours.
The train takes at least seven hours. So you have to work out the benefits of cost versus time and make a judgement accordingly.
On that route I'd prefer to fly.
The train trip takes about five hours total when you factor in the trip from Amsterdam to Brussels plus the Eurostar trip from Brussels to London. On the other hand, you are looking at 15-20 minutes to Schiphol from Amsterdam, and then you can take a VLM Airways flight into London City Airport, which is only about 15-20 minutes from Central London. Their website is www.flyvlm.com. Their fares start at about $106, which is cheaper than the train while saving a few hours, and not having the expense of a Gatwick or Heathrow Express ticket into London because London City is served by the DLR and an Oyster Card.
Here is one more option to consider: the dutchflyer rail & sail train-ferry-train. See www.dutchflyer.co.uk. Leave Amsterdam at 12:10 and arrive in London at 22:36 for a fare of £25. Or leave Amsterdam at 19:40 and arrive in London at 08:48 for a fare of £55 (includes cabin & breakfast). Saves you the cost of a night in a hotel.
