Amsterdam to Cinque and Cinque to Sorrento...

I am having difficulty finding the best way to get from Amsterdam to the CT. I am going to Amsterdam from July 14th to the 17th. I left the 17th night open and am staying in Monterosso on the 18th. What would be the best and most cost efficient way to get there? Also, after the CT, I will be traveling to the Amalfi Coast. Any suggestions on the best ways to get there? Would it be wise to just get a eurorail pass for Italy??? Suggestions are welcome! Thank you Rick Steves and friends!!!

Susan, Travel from Amsterdam to Monterosso will be VERY long by train (~18H), so a budget flight would be the best choice. My preference would be EasyJet from Amsterdam / AMS to Milan / MXP. They currently have a flight listed for €47.99, departing at 09:30, arriving 11:10. I also had a brief look at flights to Pisa, however they weren't quite as "direct" as EasyJet to Milan (and were more expensive). Travel from Milano Centrale to Monterosso is easy by train. For travel from Monterosso to the Amalfi coast, take the local train to La Spezia and then a direct train to Roma Termini (travel time ~3H:45M). Use EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita from Rome to Napoli Centrale and then the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. You didn't specify where you'd be going on the "Amalfi coast", however Sorrento would make a good base for touring that area. I wouldn't bother with a Railpass for the few journeys you'll be taking, especially considering these don't include the cost of reservations which are compulsory on some of the trains you'll be using. You would have to pay separately for those. Happy travels!
