Avoid if possible. Amsterdam in taxis are poorly regulated. Drivers often speak little English and don't know the city well. TCA company is preferred over any others. Be sure to always get the drivers personal number, company name, cab number. Photos help with complaints - not kidding. Taxis from Amsterdam Centraal don't want short hauls. As my wife has difficulty with walking far, we needed cab to hotel not far from the Centraal. Driver refused; told us to walk, which resulted in a heated argument. To get from our hotel to hop on, hop off canal boat required a cab, which was beckoned by the doorman. Driver spoke bare bones English, didn't know where to go despite address and map that I provided. Smack in the middle of the street in heavy traffic, he refused to go any farther and dumped us in the middle of the street fronting Amsterdam Centraal. Use city trams, or even better, the hop on, hop off boats, which go to all major museums.
