Amsterdam Connection

Hi
Do you think a 2 1/2 hour layover is enough? Traveling from Munich to Amsterdam and then on to our flight home (US). I think we don't deal with Custons until we get to the US? I thought I read something about passport control when you leave Europe?

TIA

Did you book this on one ticket?
You will go thru passport control in Amsterdam because you leave the Schengen zone.

My transfers through AMS have been quite smooth and efficiently handled. My experience is that the layover time that you’ve indicated is generous and sufficient.

Thank you! Yes, the tickets were booked on one ticket 2 different airlines.

How long is the process to exit the country?

It's very short, you show them your passport and move on to the gates for passengers leaving the Schengen area. You should have no time problem. Even if something goes seriously wrong, the airlines will get you home. You'll go through US immigration and customs when you first land in the US.

"Yes, the tickets were booked on one ticket 2 different airlines."

So, maybe you could expand on this statement? Do you mean 2 different airlines that are in the same airline alliance like SkyTeam (Delta and KLM) or Star Alliance (United and Lufthansa)? or Did you book thru an online travel agent that put you on 2 unrelated airlines?

I'm asking because if you've got checked luggage and are flying with 2 "related" airlines your luggage will be checked through and your time frame should work well. If you are on 2 unrelated airlines you would have to go claim your bags and recheck and you may not have enough time.

Awesome...thanks for the extra information. I agree with the others that 2.5 should be fine unless your flight out of Munich is delayed and then the airline will have duty of care to get you on another flight home.

Please explain what you mean by "unrelated" - it is possible to sell a ticket for two airlines which aren't in the same alliance and still have them check through luggage - as long as there is an Interline agreement between the two carriers.

I did this a few years ago flying LAX to Berlin - first leg was Air New Zealand LAX to LHR [flight no longer offered] then LHR to Berlin on British Airways. Not a codeshare - not possible to book through BA or Air NZ, but available on Expedia - I used a local travel agent. Bags were checked through and it worked out fine - and it was actually an open jaw, with the return to LHR from Vienna.

But you do have to understand what you're buying - this may be different from the "two separate tickets sold together" that you'll see on Google Flights. It may be designated as "multiple airlines" - and you would have to recognize they aren't in the same alliance.

Did you buy the ticket directly from the airline or through something like expedia?
