Hi! I have a 12 hour lay-over (from Rome) in Amsterdam (Main-Schiphol) in September and I was hoping to go into the city. What is the easiest way? Would I need to re-check my bags if I am just connecting (flying Rome-Amsterdam-Detroit)? Also, are there readily available luggage lockers? Thanks!
I can't remember if there are any lockers at Schiphol but there are banks of really good lockers at Amsterdam Centraal Station.
The easiest way to get into the city is via the airport's train station, the ticket desks are on the same level as arivals. Buy your ticket and take the lift down to the rail platform. Ride into Centraal Station, check your bags into a locker and walk out and enjoy.
As long as your connecting flight isn't on a discount airline, you should be able to "tag" your check-in luggage all the way to Rome without having to recollect it. There are locker both before and after security and Schipol. Be aware they have just installed new lockers at Centraal Station, these new hi-tech lockers will only accept European credit/debit cards with smart chips; US cards can't be used.
