American Airlines- seat upgrade

I purchased tickets for a flight to CDG months ago and my flight was changed. I had purchased upgraded seats and they wouldn’t refund me…needless to say, I won’t play Russian Roulette again and hope I get the seats I paid for.
I was unable to get Delta this trip, which is my preferred airline so I’m crossing my fingers it’s at least a smooth flight!!

If they changed your flight, and you paid for upgraded seats, then you should get similar seats on the new flight. Call them again to make sure you get these seats.

In most cases, seats alone are not refundable.

This also happened to me. I paid for premium economy. After my flights were cancelled twice, I ended up on a flight where no seats in premium economy were available.

I was told I might still get a seat closer to flight time, and if not, I could fight for a refund after the trip. Now I don't even have my seats confirmed, because they want MORE money to buy a seat selection in coach!

At this point, I just hope I actually get to my destination.

Hi Danielle,
Are you not able to see the seats they’ve placed you in to know if you were put in the correct category? Regardless, I hope it works out. Like others have mentioned, you should be able to request a refund if you are placed in normal economy.

Frank II- I will try to call them again but their customer service is horrible! I’ve had to reach out to them a few times (including the flight they initially changed me to where my connection landed after my long haul took off!) and hardly had any help.

Ladyvet27 Ugh how frustrating! Are you with American too? I’ll be sending positive vibes your way as well!

Amanda - I could only get regular economy, as the seat selection was very limited. Would have been nice to have the premium, but right now there are none that have regular seats near them for my kids. I just need a refund at this point unless they are courteous at check in. But American has not impressed me enough to have hope.

I’m like Ladyvet27- just wanting to get to my destination!

I fly American much of the time and don't have problems.

If no premium seats are available on your new flight, you can request being moved to a flight that has premium seats.

If they moved you to a new flight, you have the right to request a full refund. Even on non-refundable tickets.

If you want to see your assigned seats, log into your flight by using the record locater.

Frank II - This was the best flight I could find through AA. I’m going to try again and get a refund. I chose the best seats I could for my family (ones that were left), as my flight was changed in October and I bought them early (March) so that we did have early access to the seats. I haven’t flown AA in years and only for short hauls. How is the in flight experience/on time flights with AA?

Thanks so much!

Danielle, you really don't want to know about AA's on-time performance. That being said, my husband is Diamond on Delta and is very angry and frustrated that he has to make changes to his business flights by waiting on the phone instead of being able to handle them online-so angry that he is flying other airlines. I don't think any of the airlines in the US are doing a good job of customer service right now-all you can really expect is a safe flight.

Cala- agreed. A safe flight is definitely all we can hope for! My connection is DFW, leaving first from Albuquerque - I’m not expecting my first flight to be delayed. And as long as my flight from DSW isn’t canceled I’m alright with a bit of a wait. As long as I get to Paris I’ll be a happy camper!

...unless one of your fellow passengers gets drunk, becomes verbally belligerent, and then starts punching people.

Alisjames99- good to hear, as I haven’t come across a lot of decent reviews! Thank you!

In May 2019, we took American Airlines from Denver to Philadelphia to Rome. Our return was Paris-Dallas-Denver. It was a mixed bag. The domestic legs were delayed and horrible. Even with a 2 1/2 window, we nearly missed our connection in Philly. However, the international legs were fabulous. To Rome was very smooth. From Paris, we were on a nearly new 787 Dreamliner. It was one of the most spacious, comfortable international flights I've been on. It was beyond annoying to go from that to being stuck for 6 hours in Dallas. AA didn't seem to care and made no accommodations. We will fly AA again when it fits our plans but I don't have great expectations for the flights IN the USA.
