Amalfi Coast Water Transportation

We're renting an apartment in Praiano in October 2010 for a week. We'd like to take the ferry/hydrofoil to Capri and Naples but I'm having a hard time finding information about timetables and prices. We'd like to leave from Positano, but Sorrento would be fine to. If anyone has any advice, I'd be grateful for it.

Hi Michelle - Steve has done it again - not much else has to be said except - I'm Italian and spend a few months in the area each year and I never concern myself with schedules - when you're ready to go to Capri, Sorrento, or Positano or even Amalfi simply go down to the ferry or hydrofoil station and wait a half hour for the next transport - np !!! have a cold one while waiting. And the prices are not bad - Napoli to capri - about 16 euro's per person and roughly the same or less for the other destinations -

Ciao, Greg

The seasonal coastal services eg Metro del Mare and Co-op Sant Andrea start shutting down at the end of September with most of the routes finished by the end of the first week in October. However that is not set in stone, last year they shut down all routes early at the end of September!

The Sorrento to Capri and Sorrento to Naples services run all year round weather permitting. There was also a service, Alicost, out of Salerno for Amalfi - Positano - Capri and return that ran most of the winter last year but who knows for this year.

If you go to Capri check your return journey options, there is no Plan B should you miss the last boat!

It can be hard to find info, and the posted info doesn't always seem to match what the ferrys are doing. What I do is go down to the dock and look at the signs on the booths and figure out what times they go and how long the journey takes (some boats are much faster than others).

Michelle,

We just spent 2.5 days on the Amalfi Coast. On a whim we decided to ride the ferry to from Positano to Amalfi...we went to the booth, selected our desired time, purchased our ticket, and then waited for our ride. Our other party went on ahead by car and met us in Amalfi. I think that it cost us 7 euro per ticket. It was a nice ride and the sites were breath-taking from the water.
