All of Europe Train Tour

My wife and I are planning a Europe trip from the USA within five years. I think I have the United Kingdom portion of the trip as we want it, but will need assistance with the rest of it. Here's the basic itinerary starting after the train from London to Paris: 1. Paris with a rental car to Normandy and Utah Beach then back to Paris. 2. Paris to Berlin. 3. Berlin to Osweicim, Poland 4. Osweicim to Venice. 5. Venice to Rome and Pompeii 6. Rome to Spain (unsure of what cities as of yet) 7. Spain to Gibraltar 8. Day trip to Cueta 9. Gibraltar back to Paris
10. Paris to London to fly home. I have been looking at a Global Flexi Saver pass for our rail travel but have many questions. How will I know which train will require a reservation? How do I get a sleeper car (2 berth with a securely locked door, please) for those long overnighters? When does hiring a car make sense? I read a response on this website that said responders on here will think of things that the questioner will never think of. That's what I need most...to hear about things that I would never think of. Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

My only comment on a trip 5 years out is that things change. I'd guess, crystal ball completely fogged and covered with moss, that some of (maybe all) the night trains with sleepers will go. Pure guess, but maybe.

Well, it's within five years (now to five years from now). Either way, I was wondering how things work now to prepare. I usually research trips far in advance. I read since this post that long distance trains usually require a reservation while local, regional trains do not if you have a pass. True? Also, is it truly an advantage to purchase a Global Flexi Saver over purchasing train tickets without a pass?
