Not sure how one can read from that article that night trains are experiencing a "resurgence." It tells of how they have been in steady decline (some routes I have taken just a few years ago are now cancelled), but that at least new cuts have stopped.

I used to like taking them, partly for the "romance" of leaving on a train at night and being in a new city in the morning. And it was a nice way to meet people, even if just for a few hours. But they rarely provide a good night's sleep, even when in a nicer cabin. But they were great for college kids on rail passes just winging it and sleeping on the floors.

I'd guess that some lines will survive for the time being but that discount airfares have all but ended them.

What I remember about night trains is what little sleep I got. When the train stopped at at a station there would be all this yelling by the train guys and the station master, and sometimes a coach would be taken off and that was noisy, too. One time three of us in a 4 bunk cabin were joined at a stop by a man for the fourth bunk. When he took off his shoes we all nearly passed out from the odour. Not terribly romantic.

But once we took the night train from Cairo to Luxor, just my husband and I in a tiny cabin, with a sink and a toilet. That was fun. We were even served breakfast in our little abode. Quite exotic as well as romantic.

Thanks for informative article, some night routes in operation I didn't know of, such as Vienna to Gdansk. That is definitely one doable night route for a future travel plan. The article points to the decline of night train routes but only offers one route as supporting evidence, Paris to Berlin. Berlin-Amsterdam is also abolished at night but not Vienna-Berlin or Vienna -Amsterdam. Tweak the options and you can still go with the night train option. But the hubs in Central Europe for EN night routes are still in full operation, ie Krakow and Budapest. Both offer a several night routes as options
