I think you mean the brief era of cheap "transatlantic flights" may be slowly ending. But what does that have to do with this story?
Alitalia is in it's second bankruptcy and burning thru the last huge "loan" from the Italian gov't. They haven't been profitable for decades. There's no way the airline can dig itself out of the debt hole it's in. The current Italian gov't can't nationalize it without breaking campaign promises that may cause a new gov't election to see if they can stay in power, but if it comes down to that or no longer having a "national" airline all bets are off. Delta would be wise to run away.
