Alitalia "packing light" flight to Sicily advice is needed

Hello All,
We are packing light for our June 2020 trip and will not be checking in any luggage for our party of 4. We are flying roundtrip Alitalia to Catania, Sicily from Rome, FCO and I want to confirm the bags I am bringing will be OK to bring on board the airplane. I read the hand baggage rules but I want to confirm (I think it is are unclear). Can someone tell me for sure this will be acceptable to bring on board for Alitalia? This is what I want to bring:
1. Backpack (weight limit: 8kg)
measures within "hand Baggage" limits of:
55cm x 35cm x 25cm
and
2. mini rolling tote (not sure of Alitalia's weight limit on "under the seat " luggage)
measures within 36cm x 45cm x 20cm
Help on clarifying this is greatly appreciated!
Janet

2 years ago, I took an Alitalia flight from Catania to Naples. Though branded Alitalia in an Alitalia plane, it was a Polish airline that operated the flight, not Alitalia. And they had different baggage rules including only bringing one piece of luggage on board. They did weigh and measure some bags.

Thanks for the replies but my main question is; will I be able to bring these two bags on board with out having to check them:
1. Backpack (weight limit: 8kg)
measures within "hand Baggage" limits of:
55cm x 35cm x 25cm
and
2. mini rolling tote (measures within personal item size)
measures within 36cm x 45cm x 20cm

From the Alitalia website it looks like you wouldn’t be able to have the rolling tote as it is likely to be too big. The second item is described as an accessory not luggage, and the examples given are much smaller than your wheeled tote. As you have plenty of time before you leave why don’t you email Alitalia and ask them? Maybe include a photo with a tape measure to show the dimensions.

As I understand the guidance, in addition to whatever hand baggage you are entitled to, you are also allowed one of the following 3 personal items: briefcast, laptop, handbag. Neither of your pieces fits that description.

I would not interpret the "under seat" guidance to mean you can bring a second piece that is not one of the 3 specifically mentioned personal items. It is vague and ambiguous. Maybe it means that smaller carry-ons will be tagged under-seat and can't be stored in overhead? Maybe it means a laptop bag that's a wheelie?

Worst case scenario - you get to the airport with both pieces and one has to be checked in.
