Alitalia? Help

I am getting 10 tickets for JFK to Milan for next year. Alitalia has best price and best times for what we need and non-stop. However, I am reading not so good things AND they are out of money and 49% being bought by same owner of Emirates. I am worried about making this purchase, nervous they will cancel or change flight times, so forth.

Would anyone have recommendations or thoughts? Thanks!

I think United used to run a direct flight between Newark and Milan. If they still do, it may be worth checking. Best of luck!

Thanks but we are driving from RI to JFK because we are saving $400 a ticket x 10 tickets instead of flying from Boston! Its worth extra 1 1/2 hr drive. But Newark is way too far haha. We are looking at a Swiss Air flight and they seem to have good reviews other than some stuck up people that didnt get their wine in first class every 22 minutes ha.

Anyone flown Swiss from the U.S.?

we flew Swiss air from o hare to Zurich and into Florence this July. great food, free movies, plenty of beverages, pillows, blankets, thorough staff and everything ran like a Swiss clock. it must have been the best price the day we booked........

edited to add....I checked my bag gasp holding out the barest essentials.....and there was no problem with my luggage.

Eithad bought 49% of Alitalia, not Emirates. Seriously check the price difference for Emirates to Milan. You will be glad you flew Emirates. I recently (May 2014) flew Emirates from JFK and it was hands down the best airline I have ever flown on. I also recently flew (June 2014) Swiss Air to Milan. I don't believe they have any direct flights and they often partner with other airlines. My flight was scheduled JFK to Zurich, then Zurich to Milan. Less then 24 hours before departure they texted me that the Zurich to Milan leg was cancelled. I called them and they booked me onto a Lufthasa flight to Frankfurt then Frankfurt to Milan. Great flight as it was the new Airbus a380 and I had a bulkhead seat, fantastic flight also. However, Emirates, in every aspect of a flight was just superior, and at the time easily the least expensive flight. This is a relatively new route for them (JFK - Milan) and they are trying to establish market share.

PS: I have flown Alitalia many times with out incident. I always carry-on, so I never have to deal with baggage claim.

If I had to go to Milan ten times, I would take Emirates coach unless it was over double the competition. Their service is unbelievable.

I will never buy Alitalia again, after they cancelled my entire route (i.e. not just one flight on one day), a month before our summer vacation. I had to invoke non-delivery of services to get my CREDIT CARD company (not financial basket-case Alitalia) to refund those tickets that Alitalia cancelled! Never again.

We found Delta non stop. We just want to get there and back and have our bags :)

FYI, delta flies codeshares w Alitalia -- that's how I ended up on Alitalia a few times. Just in case, do carry on if possible. Or if you're checking, put nonessentials in checked piece and carry as much as possible.

We were recently on Alitalia out of JFK to Rome (code share with Delta) and it was an excellent flight. Returned on Delta and actually through the service to Rome on Alitalia was a little better. It is a dice roll.

Delta's website will tell you if a flight is operated by Alitalia. If it is non-stop, it is probably on Delta. If not, they tell you upfront.
