We are taking Alitalia within Italy (Venice to Naples) in a few weeks. Their website is a bit confusing about carry-ons for domestic travel. They show the dimensions for a typical carry-on suitcase but say you are limited to 11 lbs. Also, there is no mention if one is allowed a carry-on plus a personal item (purse, etc.) We have pretty much decided to check our bags for this flight but would rather save the time and carry them on. Let me know if you have had recent experience with this airline.
Flew them in Dec 2007. I carried on to Europe -- one smallish backpack and a purse. They may or may not have been under 11 lbs, but other passengers definitely had overweight suitcases and no one paid any attention. The only thing they asked me was how many bags I had total (2) and that was fine.
From recent reports, I'd say you should plan to carry on, if at all possible, if you want to make sure you have luggage upon arrival.
I might advise you to call them directly with your questions to ensure you’re getting good information. Alitalia has received fairly negative reviews on this helpline a number of times as of late (actually for a couple of years now).
I have heard the stories of lost luggage with Alitalia. Do you think if we try to carry on and they take our luggage to check at the gate instead of at the ticket counter that we would have better success not loosing it? Thanks for your replies.
