Alitalia cancelled my husband and I on a flight from Newark to Rome on 2 consecutive days and offered no alternative.
What compensation can we expect Alitalia to provide?
Sent Alitalia letter with supporting docs asking to be compensated for cost of plane tickets and hotel deposits, etc. Alitalia says they have 90 days to respond and won't confirm receipt of certified mail sent Oct 1, 2009
Unfortunately Alitalia is well known for being very poor to customers. I do not know a solution but you are nice to spread the word about what happened to warn others.
Sadly, all they owe you is a refund. You can try to get back other costs but its doubtful.
Alitalia has been in trouble for a long time, in bankruptcy, and on the verge of folding. You probably booked them because of low price and unfortunately this is what you get. Trip interruption insurance would have help you. Try to get your credit card to help with the refund even if beyond the 60 day window.
Sadly, they don't even owe you a refund, unless it's explicitly stated in your contract of carriage.
Just be patient, and keep on them. Document everything, and get your credit card company, and travel agent (if you had one) in on it.
I read an article in the Guardian that seemed to indicate EU carriers are responsible for reimbursing up to 600 euros for flights cancelled due to mechanical problems (not weather related problems).
I'm hoping other passengers who were on this flight will respond to share any info they may have.
What Steve wrote about EU compensation rules is correct, sort of. He should have kept reading. It doesn't cover flights originating outside the EU.
In the U.S., even if the airline cancels a flight and doesn't offer an alternative, but offers to refund your money, then that's all they are responsible for.
