Good news -- airfare has dropped by several hundred from NYC and/or PHX to LON. I am sure that spells fare reductions on other routes too.
Yes, all three dropped -- USAir the most.
Hopefully as a result, Lufthansa's prices will drop. I flew USAir to Munich two years ago, and I will never do it again, particularly if it requires a change of planes in Philly, the worst airport, IMO, in the world.
Re IcelandAir's fares -- would that hold true for Autumn travel? The cheapest fare right now for SEA-LON/AMS-SEA is(just looking for the hell of it) is $800. I wonder how likely it'll be to find anything cheaper later on.
Interesting post, Steve. We just booked our summer trip (June 12-26) to Scandinavia on Icelandair. JFK-HEL, then OSL-KEF(24 hour stopover)-JFK, $1053 p.p. round trip. I wondered if fares were ever going to go down, since they were progressively rising since January. I did manage to catch them down $74 on Tuesday evening, so I grabbed them. If it's true the seats are filling up, I'm glad I got them.
You can still get SFO - Zurich RT, all in, for $763 leaving Sundays in May with USAir. Not bad. But if you're still looking, better fares for May-June will likely appear in March, as they usually do.
Lee - I feel your pain. I now fly thru Charlotte when taking US Airways to Europe.
I agree, Russ. We got our R/T for May/June on March 6th last year; with all fees for $525. Looking for the same, but probably wull have to come up with a few more scheckels this year.
We'll just sit back and wait for the auto-notices to come in.
I heard Lufthanza air was going to strike.....if this is the case, I don't see how they can drop prices....should we cancel and try another airline?
Jamie,
They can lower prices hoping that folks will "ignore" the strike risk and buy.
And until the strike happens, you probably can't cancel and rebook. You won't get any money back from Luftansa.
Edit, hit reply too soon.
You won't get any money back from Luftanasa UNLESS you purchased a refundable fare. (Which if you are buying cheap airfares you probably didn't, but..)
Also, the next advice will be "buy trip insurance" Before you do that make sure it covers the strike risks. With some of them once the strike is "threatened" there's no coverage.
So does anyone have a recommendation for trip insurance companies?
I have used TravelGuard and had to make a claim once, went fairly smooth from what I remember (It was YEARS ago)
great info everyone thank you. I'm trying to plan a trip to italy and greece in june. hoping air will drop....will ck out all this info. any tricks to flying into a specific country, catching a connector to save money?
