For the first time in 40 years the Alaska Ferry from Fairhaven/Bellingham to Alaska Ports has stopped until further notice. Refunds are promised. If you are here in Washington State; take time to see our Beautiful home instead.
Also, you can check on last minute openings for Alaska Cruises as an alternative. Cruises can be cheaper.
As a former Alaskan, I can appreciate how difficult this is for the residents of the small communities of Southeast Alaska, Yes, tourists will feel the impact, but the number who use the ferries is small compared to the number of cruise ship passengers.
I checked the other day, and to take my truck and fifth wheel trailer up to Alaska on the state owned ferry was only $8,000+. Alaska is supposedly the #1 road trip for any RV'er. But at that price, it'd have to be by ground.
The ferries are not cheap, but they are often the only reliable regular way in and out of some communities. As for road trips, you can drive to Alaska. But if you want to do it pulling your RV you best be prepared to spend more than $8k. The ferries are still cheaper than the alternatives.
The Alaska ferry is priced by length of the vehicle and length of the journey. A truck with 5th wheel trailer would be quite long and yes, expensive. Especially as you would have to stay on to the end of the line (Haines) to access the rest of Alaska by road.
We used the ferry to travel from Alaska to the lower 48 in winter; in a car that was under 19’ it was less expensive than driving (gas plus the inevitable broken windshield in the days before the AlCan highway was paved.
