Alaska Airlines makes the “Top Ten” for safety

This airline has come a long way since the 1970’s when I lived in Alaska and was jokingly called “Elastic Scarelines” by the Alaskan residents. Ever since I moved to the Seattle area in 1988, Alaska has been my favorite airline.

While most people outside the State of Washington think of Seattle-based Alaska as a local carrier serving mainly West-coast routes (including Alaska and Hawaii), the airline now serves cities all across the US, including East-coast cities such as New York/Newark, Washington DC (all 3 airports), Charleston SC, and Miami/Fort Lauderdale, plus heartland cities such as Chicago and Kansas City. Beyond domestic flights, they also serve Canada and Mexico, and now Tokyo. And as a One-World Alliance member, they partner with major foreign airlines such as British Airways, Qantas, Finnair, Iberia, and more.

Also, Alaska miles can be redeemed on even more airlines, including Aer Lingus, Icelandair, Air Tahiti Nui, Condor and more. Their mileage program has been very good to us, providing First Class flights on Qantas (to Australia) and Japan Airlines, and Business Class on Condor and British Airways to Europe. I will caution, however, that there is a learning curve involved in scoring the seats in premium cabins, starting with planning well in advance.

All of this is mainly of interest to people living in the western states (California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, etc.), but those living further east might consider Alaska for flights to Hawaii, Mexico, Alaska, and Japan.

Alaska has flights not involving the west coast, for example seasonally Minneapolis >> ANC. Having done that 6 hour flight on Delta in coach, I would pay a little more for the comparatively fabulous Alaska coach seat, as I noted here.

Lola, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Alaska Airlines. I’ve flown them for over 20 years and have been very pleased with the flights. Surprisingly, their fares lately to Hawaii and Texas have been better than Hawaiian (now partners w/Alaska) and Southwest. For many years, my family took advantage of their credit card program using the Companion fare. Nowadays, I travel solo mostly so don’t take advantage of that benefit but for 15 years, we totally enjoyed the discount on the second person traveling the same itinerary. And, yes, their seating is more comfortable than other airlines in my experience.

I too am a fan of Alaska Airlines. We have been flying with them for ages and have never had an issue that I can remember. We are headed to Alaska in a few weeks and used miles on Delta , so am bummed that we are not in Alaska, but oh well.

I’m in Fairbanks at present, even in January at sub zero temperatures. Have grandchildren, will travel! We have the Alaska Airlines Visa card that we use as our main cc. We fly DFW to FAI usually twice a year using miles and also the companion fare. We fly their version of main cabin extra for the legroom. I will say the flight attendants seem friendlier than other airlines and their fruit and cheese platters are pretty darn good!

I found Alaska Airlines very satisfactory going to London, had a 5 hour layover in SEA-TAC, a good airport for a long layover. All in all, a good experience. What surprised me was the duration of the flight from SEA-TAC to London was shorter that I had expected.

I suspect that the Seattle-London flight mentioned above was a code share. Perhaps with British Air or AA. Up until the recent merger with Hawaiian Air they only had narrow body aircraft that are incapable of nonstop flights to Europe. But it’s also possible that my memory is faulty. ;)

Tailwinds will do that.

Once flew SEA-ATL in less than 4 hrs. I was really counting on a bit longer nap time!

The Alaska Airlines credit card is the best in my opinion, especially without having to have a more expensive per year credit card offered by the majors, to get some of the same comparable benefits. Currently they are offering 70K miles, which is easily a RT to Europe if you book early, which I use Alaska miles on American. The companion fare as someone above mentioned, is also a great perk, 2nd passenger pays $99 plus taxes. Also 2 checked bags free if you are a cardholder. First year of card is free, $99 thereafter. I like when I call in that they have great customer service and phone reps from cities I am familiar with. I think all of the above are reasons they are growing by leaps and bounds.

Note, the card terms have changed for new accounts, so read all the fine print. You only get one free bag per person on your reservation and you need to spend $6k before you qualify for the companion fare.
