Has anyone had recent experience (say within the last 6 months) with this airline. I have read the old posts which sound dreadful, but wondered if there have been any improvements since the merger with AirOne? I have to fly them from Rome to Sicily in Sept and wanted to set my expectations.

To find more recent Alitalia posts that have appeared here:Go to Google Advanced Search,in search within a site box enter ricksteves.comexpand date and select last year (can't do last 6 months)in all these words box enter helpline alitaliaclick Search and you'll get about 50 hits, look at the dates on those and browse the ones that interest you.

Set them low - word is they've gotten even worse with the recent economic troubles.

You might try reading here. Lots of frequent flyers for this airline there who probably have recent first hand expereince

Just don't cancel!
I had to cancel my March 30 - April 16 flights Miami/Rome/Venice. Canceled by phone. They will not give any confirmation such as email until after the cancellation is "processed."
They said they would credit the card I used minus $220 cancellation fee.
After 3 wks I emailed the company. Their reply was I have to do everything by phone. By phone they say they are "backed up" and have "no idea" when my refund will be processed.
Has anyone actually gotten a refund from Alitalia?
