Coming from the US and planning to stay in the St. Goar area, which airport would use in Frankfurt? Also can you train to St. Goar from it? We may have a rental car and wonder what the drive to St. Goar may be like on a weekday mid morning in Sept.
Nan, As you're coming from the U.S., it's highly likely that you'll be landing at Frankfurt International (FRA) rather than Frankfurt Hahn (HHN). There are two rail stations right in the airport, one for long distance trains (Fernbahnhof) and one for Regional trains (I believe it's next to Terminal 1, but hopefully Lee or one of the others can confirm that). The station you want is the Regional station. There are frequent departures towards St. Goar. The trip is ~1H:15M, with one change at Oberwesel or perhaps Mainz. Current fare shown is €16.40. Happy travels!
thanks everyone for your help!
You would land at the Frankfurt airport. You could probably land at Cologne, but Frankfurt would be the best. From here, you could just jump on a Regional train and be in St. Goar rather quickly, 1.5 hours. Have to ask one of the drivers how long this takes.
The Regionalbahnhof at FRA is actually under the building across the access road from Terminal 1. You get to it by going down steps from the outside wall of the hall of Terminal 1 and through a mall under the road. It serves all regional trains and S-Bahn and a few ICs. The Fernbahnhof is farther out, on the other side of the building across the road. There is a pedestrian bridge from the mezzanine of Terminal 1 to the building, and you go through a hallway to the Fernbahnhof. You can purchase a Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket at a Bahn automat in the Regional Bahnhof at FRA or from any ticket machine in the Mainz Hbf. For €25 for 2 people, it give you unlimited hop on/off use of regional trains and buses all day long (after 9 AM workdays) in the land of Rheinland-Pfalz. That's from Mainz down the Rhein to Bonn or up the Mosel to Trier. You would also need a local ticket (S-Bahn) from the airport to Mainz for €4,10. That's 20 cent more per person than the point-point tickets, but after checking in in St. Goar, you can go anywhere else that day by train or bus on the ticket.
The easiest way to get to the Regional train station is to go down the escalator that is located in Arrrival Hall B-1. Buy your ticket from the touch screen machines that switch to English and get on your train at track 3.
September is wine fest time on the Rhine. Book early for the best choice of rooms/apartments. See St. Goar's tourism office pages for the most complete listings - you'll find only a few hotels listed at sights like booking.com: http://www.st-goar.de/612-1-host-directory.html
take notice of Russ's comment- the Rhine villages are extremely popular when the wine festivals are on- hotels fill up rapidly. We got stuck one year.
