The cheapest flights I can get feature an airport switch from Gatwick to Heathrow. The time between flights is 3-4 hours. Is this reasonable? Has anyone done this and is there a usual time of travel between the two airports?

No, you won't be able to make it in 3-4 hours. The airports are about 50 miles apart. In fact, some would say you would be hard pressed to make a connection within Heathrow with a three hour layover:)

I did this between Heathrow and Stansted, which is about the same distance. On my first trip (Heathrow to Stansted), I arrived at 8:20, caught the National Express bus, and arrived in plenty of time to have caught the outgoing 11:00 flight. (I had booked the 3:00, though, because I wasn't sure I could make the transfer in time.) On the way back we got stuck in traffic between Stansted and Heathrow and the travel time between the two was close to three hours. You MIGHT make it, but I wouldn't count on it.
