Airport Security, Multiple flights

We only started to fly 2 years ago, so we are not that experienced. We are wondering if anyone has some suggestions about dealing with the new higher level security searches. Let me make this clear. i am not averse to security and cooperate fully. ButI had a double hip replacement several years ago, so I set off all the US detectors (hey, I can't even get into the federal office building here in Philly to pay my taxes without setting off the detectors). This summer's trip will unfortunately involve 3 flights each way, Philly->Boston->Zurich-> Budapest, return Krakow->Munich-> DC-Philly. Is there any way to ease this issue so that after I am subject to full screening for the first flight I then don't have to go through this immediately again 2 hours later? I know part of the problem is staying "sterile". We carry our bags, we are ticketed through with passes printed. Is there any way you can get escorted from de-planing sterile and be deposited into the departure gate staying sterile?
Part of this is not wanting excessive radiation and searching. part of this is if we can be kept clean why hold up the lines again, especially knowing we will cause delays for everyone else. Or am I living in a dream world to think that something this logical can be done? Just as an example, last summer we connected from US into Prague and back , BA all the way, through LHR T-5. Given the layout of the two buildings, I can't understand how they could not have provided for this possibility.

The short answer is no, you can't "ease the issue". Security processes can be different at different airports, whether you are flying internationally or not. You're never going to find a situation where you can reliably know ahead of time that you can bypass all other security once you pass the first point. I agree it would be nice if you could go through it only once, but it's not going to happen.

Larry, "Or for that matter prove they are mine?" All of the X-Rays that I've seen have a small tag (usually on one of the corners) with the patient's name and other details. Your implants will likely be most noticeable when passing through the Metal Detector "arch" and the security staff will be able to confirm the location using Hand Scanners. I believe Schiipol is using full-body Scanners for flights to the U.S., so that may eliminate some of the delays in the process. You may have to endure a "pat down". I don't have any experience in dealing with this particular situation, so can only offer a few suggestions. In the same situation, I'd probably try to get a translation done of the wording on the yellow card that you mentioned, into the languages of the countries you'll be visiting. Good luck!

Partly a dream world. Remember a high percentage of security is for show. The is a program call Global Pass, I think, that allows for bypassing some screening. It was discussed earlier on this site with mixed reviews. Might goggle it and see what shows up. I find that once behind security you generally stay security but there is always additional screening for the actual international flight. Just carry your x-rays. Good luck.

Carry the x-raysrighthow do you get them into an on-board carrier without ruining them (or running into the excess cabin piece if you keep them out and are on a budget line)? Or for that matter prove they are mine? Enough joking, though. Seriously, I do carry the yellow plastic wallet card issued by the orthopedists. I am lucky if our screeners know what that is, let alone the foreign ones. Incidentally, the machines at Schiphol, which are at each actual departure gate, rather than a mass line-up, and I don't have a clue what their actual technology is, do not have an issue with my implants.
Like I said - it's not just for me. When you have massive lines, including people who may have stuck themselves with a real bad time issue, do you really want to be the one being stared down while everyone working has to attend to you, when it could have been avoided somehow? Ir really do NOT want to hold up the other travelers.

I'm not sure why you'd need to go through security "2 hours later". Assuming those are connecting flights you listed, the only time you'll go through security is on the initial flight coming and going. Lots of people have hip replacements, metal pins, pacemakers, etc. Just tell the security guys and carry any documentation you have verifying that. I wouldn't expect one airport to honor a "Trust This Guy" card from another airport. For all they know, you might be a terrorist, or someone blackmailed or threatened into doing their dirty work, who didn't place the bomb/weapon on their body until after the initial screening.

I'm not sure why you'd need to go through security "2 hours later". Assuming those are connecting flights you listed, the only time you'll go through security is on the initial flight coming and going. Travelers have to go through another check "2 hours later" all the time. For example, should your flight connect through Newark you plane deboards at terminal one, and your connecting flight is at terminal three, there is a good chance you'll have to deal with the TSA again. Of course if your changing planes in another country, all transfer passengers go through a security clearance again.

This summer's BA connections forced me to have a complete re-screening in Heathrow 5 to get to the next departure area, both outbound and inbound. Actually the more I think about this with all the protest over the scanners and pat downs the last few days, the more annoyed I am getting about the basic idea I have suggested. Why can't folks be delivered directly from airplane to next departure point and kept out of the public areas that make them need to be re-screened? "Trust this guy" would not figure in tot his. We have to have security - but why can't we have sensible provisions that work for everyone?

In the EU, flights coming in from countries outside the EU are not regarded "clean", so when coming in from a non-EU country, you have to go through security again. In the UK, I believe that all inbound flights are regarded not clean, so all passengers go through security again. Furthermore, some airports with "security at the gate" as opposed to "cental security" cannot distinguish between "clean and "unclean" passengers, since these are mixed up, so here, all passengers go through security again.

There is no way of avoiding extra security. Here is what is going to happen: Outbound: In Philly, you go through security (of course). In Boston, it depends on the layout of the airport. If you change terminals, you will probably have to go to security again. In Zurich, you will definitely have to go to security again, since EU regards inbound passengers from outside EU as unclean. On the way back: In Krakow: security, of course. In Munich, you will prbably have to go throught security again, since US government requires an extra security check at the gate for planes inbound to the US.

It's all part of travel. You can always stay home. The other passengers are not staring at you for delaying their day. They are thinking about what they are bringing and if they will be patted down. As far as the extra radiation, come on get real! The amount of radiation is minute. With my pacemaker that I've had for over 20 years and my new hip, I would like special treatment too, but I am not complaining about it. Travel is a joy and a privilege that lots of people don't get to experience. Go with it! Get a grip!

You mention whether or not there is anything logical which can be done? You will only frustrate yourself looking for logic. Lower your expectations and remember that although an annoyance, it is the price of admission. Eyes on the prize.
