I can attest to that :-( When our flight got cancelled (Schiphol closed for an entire day) we moved on to a train with huge delays, missed connections .... and no luggage. Took 5 days for the first piece to arrive and 10 days for the last one. With Christmas gifts to take along we had no choice but to check in our luggage but this is one of the situations where carry-on makes sense. European airports are not allowed to hand out your luggage if a connection flight is cancelled and you decide to use alternate transportation (customs legislation).
