I am just shopping for a plane ticket and wondering what a good airline between the US and Madrid would be. Anyone have any favorites?
Whoever has the lowest price.
Yeah, whatever has the lowest price. Think about flying nonstop from Seattle to a city in Europe and then connecting to Madrid from there for a good option. We did that when we flew PDX-AMS-MAD and then BCN-AMS-PDX on the return. Very nice and easy.
Try looking at Aerlingus from IAD to MAD. They have doing a codeshare flight with United Airlines and I have heard it is very good.
I'm not sure which airfield you're flying from, but you asked about US to Madrid: We flew Swiss ORD to MAD, connecting through Zurich. Great airline in every way: new planes, great in-seat entertainment, great service, free chocolates, decent food options, warm towels. They've won top awards for best airline in Europe. I also look at price first but won't fly on just any airline. Some just have serious financial issues, old equipment, bad safety records, or have been fined out the wazoo for poor maintenance. It's just me, but I'm probably not going to choose Jet or LOT over Lufthansa, Swiss or Icelandair just to save a few bucks.
I recently flew from the US to Madrid on United connecting to Brussels Airlines in Brussels. For an extra charge you can get Econony Plus seating on United which gives you 5" of extra legroom. BA is like flying in the US used to be: good service, inflight meals with comp wine, free luggage.
We just got back from Spain, and my cousin flew out of SeaTac. We flew out of Portland. Both of us picked the best price, and it was Delta. The flight to Amsterdam (transfer point) was one of the best over-the-pond flights that I have ever been on. (I checked the seat pitch on Seat Guru.com, and the planes that they used for that trip have lots of leg room. On top of that you can get "Economy Comfort " seats with up to 5" more leg room for an additional $80...which includes all the free booze you want...did we have fun on the way home! ) The transfer to our final flight was painless. My Nephew, who lives in Seattle, flew over the pond earlier this year on Icelandic arilines. He and his wife really enjoyed the flight, and the experience of changing planes in Iceland. Some friends just flew to the EU on Lufstansa right around the same time. Luft flys into Frankfurt (transfer point) from SeaTac. They loved their flight. We have flown Luft and Delta and have always been quite happy. What ever you do. do not fly with US Air. A transfer thru Philly is one of the worst flight experiences we have had.
