Just found out that the couple we were going with to Germany the husband has cancer and can not go. We purchased the tickets December 2nd and will be leaving July26th with Iceland Air. The other couple has the contacts and where we would be staying. We would like to get our tickets refunded but have been told that no matter what the circumstances we can get only up to 50% back. Has anyone had anything similar and what can we do. If all works out our trip will be put back to next year.

Sorry to hear this bad news. Most of the affordable airfares that leisure travelers choose are not refundable, so 50% sounds generous to me. I would not expect the airlines to make many exceptions. That is the type of situation that travel insurance is meant to cover.

You may be able to get a credit. Generally the credit has to be used within 12 months of the original booking.
