AIRLINE SEAT PRE-SELECTION

Does anyone know about BA's new policy that does not allow you to preselect your seats until 24 hrs before the flight ?
I was told by an agent that even then, a couple traveling on the same PNR could not be guarunteed that they would sit together. We plan on World Traveler Plus SFO-LHR-TXL OJ VIE-LHR-SFO. This year our assigned seats where changed on our return.

My sisters & I (3 of us)traveled on BA - BWI to LHR round trip. Our travel agent didn't know about the pre-selection when she booked our tickets & was a little concerned about our not having a choice of seats. I explored around the BA website & found that your seats are assigned & you can change them if you like when doing on-line check-in (which I was glad I had done as the flight was over-booked & we got to the airport late). We chose our seats and printed our boarding passes when we checked in on-line 24 hrs before departure (BA had us seated together). I was able to access the internet to check-in on-line before we left London & found that our assigned seats were the same as the ones we chose for the flight to LHR. I'm sure BA will assign the 2 of you next to each other, but once people start checking-in 24 hrs in advance, people who don't do it can get seperated -- it happened to a group of 3 on our return flight.

That sounds comforting. My concern was that since Word Traveler Plus is a smaller cabin (32) and you start thinking about all the combinations of singles, doubles, and threesomes that might occur (I am an engineer), it might be possible to get separated.
