We're going on Steves Portugal trip in Sept. and booked round trip tickts from LAX to Lisbon, return Barcelona to LAX. After booking and paying for tckts we discovered that we can't select seats on the outgoing flight because we're flying IBERIA for that leg (CODESHARE) and American says we have to contact IBERIA for seats. I spoke personally to someone at IBERIA and they say we can't book until 24 hrs before flight. Problem is that I need to have an aisle seat due to leg problem requires getting up at least once every hour or so. If I had kinown before I paid ticks, I wouldn't have booked with this airline. Any suggestions for how else to handle a request for seating? In 25 years of traveling, never had this problem, esp. when we booked back in April. Thanks!

There are a number of European airlines where you cannot book seats until 24 hours out. All I can say is that so far, I've always been able to get an aisle seat when I have used the online check-in right when it opened. Everyone will be in the same boat and not everyone will use online check-in as soon as it opens. That is probably not terribly reassuring, but there isn't much else to do.

According to the Iberia website you can reserve seats in advance for a transatlantic flight for a 25 euro fee: http://tinyurl.com/7bdqgra You should call them back and ask about it.
