We are traveling by Air Canada to Italy. I always carry a small spray bottle (about 2 ounces) of hair spray in my purse for quick touch ups. It is a clear bottle with no brand name on it. It is legal to carry this on the plane? I have been looking for a travel size of hairspray but can't find one. Can anyone help me? Thanks Jan
I can't answer this directly, but I can add that you need to add in where you will make any connections, as that will add an additional problem. TSA rules only apply in the US. To wit: My sons flew from here to Europe last summer, but connected in LHR, all on BA. Although their saline solution bottle (new, unopened, sealed) for their contact lenses is considered a medicine by TSA, and thus exempt from 3-1-1 and allowable directly in carry-on here, British security does not allow anything outside the 3-1-1, and forced them to toss it away in Heathrow when they re-boarded for Germany. And worse, although their replacement was allowed by EasyJet in Berlin for their next leg, when they boarded their BA connection in Amsterdam to return home (via LHR), BA officials at gate security there made them chuck that, also.
Your hairspray question should be answered here at the TSA website, be prepared to read. But I would imagine that it would not be allowed in your purse, only in our 3-1-1 bag, and under those limits.
Thanks Larry Do the TSA rules allow unlabelled liquids? Jan
Well, on most flights it would be legal as long as it is less than 3 oz and it fits within your ziploc bag (1 quart/1 litre size). If it doesn't fit in the ziploc then you need to check it. They don't care if it has a label on it.
TSA has always let us take 100ml bottles that have no labels. I use them for consumable alcohol such as vodka and whisky. No one has ever asked "What's in those bottles?".
I have never had a problem with an unlabeled item under 3 oz. That is not to say it could be a problem as I believe the rules actually specify labeled items. It would not be a great loss to try it. If it is confiscated, just go on your way and make a purchase at your destination. I buy my hair spray at Target in the special area for travel sized items. You might also try Wal-Mart or a store that specializes in cosmetics. Our local store is
called ULTA. Don't worry, it will probably be ok.
There is no rule about labeling or not, though the bottle should be marked to show how many ounces it holds (even generic travel bottles are usually marked). Anything liquid, gel, or aerosol must be less than 100 ml (3.4 oz) each, and must all fit into one ziploc bag and be able to zip.
Jan, You should be fine carrying a 2 oz. bottle of Hair Spray in your 3-1-1 bag. If my calculations are correct, 2 oz. is less than 100 mL. Although air transport rules are more-or-less standardized between countries, you'll need to refer to the CATSA website rather than TSA, as that's the agency that will be checking you through security at YVR. Happy travels!
Hasn't happened in a while, but I had a small container that did not state the amount of liquid confiscated by the TSA (clearly contained less then 3 oz) . Likewise I had a bottle that state 3.4 oz, but only 10% full and was also not allowed since the container said 3.4 oz instead of 3 oz.
Unlabeled should not be a problem. I routinely transfer beautifying liquids into small travel containers with no label and pack them in my quart size ziploc bag for security--no issue.
I have a crazy story, though, that should probably not be considered normal: The only time we have ever had a question was in China. The security agent asked about my husband's camera lens cleaner, which was in a 2 oz. spray bottle. To verify what it was, the agent poured a little bit out onto the stainless steel counter, whipped out a lighter, and attempted to light it!!! My hubbie just stared in astonishment. Being alcohol based, the tiny puddle of liquid ignited briefly, then went out. He was allowed to take it on the plane.
We have a cheapo 3-1-1 kit bought at a chain drugstore, a bag plus 4 clear bottles each under 3 ounces. There are labels that you can put on. We've had no issue putting our shampoo and conditioner in them, unlabelled.
Shouldn't be a problem so long as it is in a ziplock baggie...Security at Vancouver is tight on that. Make sure you produce the baggie as you go through security and put it in the bin to go through scanner.
I have never had a problem with my 3-1-1 bag. I always put my shampoo, hairspray, and gel in unmarked containers. As long as the are 3 oz and fit there should be no problem. I have never had a problem about the number of objects in the bag, either. I have really stuffed my bag, even laying bottles across the top sideways.
