Airfare to Bulgaria

I desperately want to visit my son Andy, a Foreign Service Officer in Bulgaria. Just the plane fare is out of my reach. Several folks told me there is a way to get your flight paid for or dramatically reduced if you deliver something personally to someone. e.g. A lawyer with documents to be delivered. Do you know of this and do you have any info on how I may look into it. Thank you so much. ( I love Rick Steves!)

Try googling Courier services and see what comes up.

Thanks Rick, I did that and most courier services require that you go when they tell you and usually need to return immediately. That won't work. But thanks for your reply!

Lorraine Can I just clarify one thing. In your response today, you said, "Thanks, Rick". The person who contributed yesterday was Arnold. This Helpline, while on the Rick Steves website and hosted by ETBD, is run by and for volunteers. None of us is directly related (as far as I know) to ETBD or the Rick Steves organization. We all contribute to help, as well as we can, and in our own way. Just to say that any answers here are not from Rick Steves or his company.

Yes, I understand and I already sent a private reply to Arnold apologizing for my writing Rick's name and not Arnold. Had not had my coffee yet...again, sorry Arnold!

it's a pretty long trip from the US and you must change at least once in Europe so the airfare can't change dramatically unless you find something out of the norm. Can only suggest you look at airfare to nearby capitals, say Istanbul or Bucharest or whatever and possibly another train ride can do, or he can meet you somewhere else, say Paris or Amsterdam.

Lorraine, If you train be sure to buy first class tickets. Second and third class train cars are left over from fifty years ago and are unpleasant to spend any time in. The cost is well worth the comfort, believe me, we've been through it. I'm refering to any travel east of Austria.

Lorraine, pick a "shoulder season" ( spring or fall) and look for the best price for a flight to any of the major hubs in the EU. Then train from there to Bulgaria, or use Whichbudget.com to find the cheapest lo-cost inter EU airline. Sign up for an auto notice from places like Kayak, etc, and sit back and see what the best prices look like. There will likely be promotions for Spring flights.

Thanks Steve. We are hoping to go in September for "Unification" celebrations.

Thanks Monte ! My frugal husband is already complaining about the trip. If he insists on 2nd or 3rd class, after I share your info, I can meet him at our destination!
