airfare consolidators

Hi,

Have you ever purchased your discounted airfare from
1800flyeurope.com? They quoted me a price almost $200+
below United's & Lufthansa's airfare (sale prices). I'm
looking for reasonable? airfare from SFO to Florence, Italy.. and it will be an open jaw..returning from Paris...into SFO.

Also, have you purchased discounted airfares with airfare.com (another consolidator)?

Would appreciate hearing your comments/suggestions.

Thanks

Would you recommend them?..or have you had any bad experiences dealing with them.

I didn't use either of the ones you reference but I did use a different consolidator. They call themselves Destination Europe but it's really through www.autoeurope.com.

I was really nervous about using them but the direct flights I wanted were about $350 cheaper through them. I did some googling on the company and called them and talked to them and finally went with it and am so glad that I did. I got my ticket confirmations and have an eticket # and everything and it was totally legit.

If you do some searches on this forum you'll find some information on flyeurope since I know it's been asked before. Some folks claimed they weren't really any lower than other airlines.

On any site you check out, be sure to look at the final price including all fees and taxes. Sometimes the initial price you see is only for the base fare.

I have used both AirGorilla and AirlineConsolidator with good results. Any consolidator will not be able to offer much on simple routes well in advance. I find that consolidators have been significantly cheaper under the following circumstances: Within a 12 week window, 8 weeks better, at that time they are trying to dump any blocks they have. Odd routes: I needed to fly into Amsterdam and out of Manchester, England. Problem is, Manchester is a BA/AA airport, and NW/KLM are best for Amsterdam. They were able to book me on those airlines, even though they are not partners at a deep discount to most search engines best price. If you missed a "deal"; Delta had very low fares to Cancun for January, but only a short window in December to purchase, I missed it by a day. Airline Consolidators had bought up seats, so I was able to get the deal still, for a small fee. Basically consolidators are just travel agencies, but they take the risk of buying blocks of tickets or making deals with airlines to fill seats. So there is no more risk in working with them than any agent, but the payoff is hit or miss depending on what they have. Try a variety of consolidators to find the right match.
