For those of you looking for deals on airfare to Europe, you may want to check out Airberlin. I just received an email listing deals if booked by January 31st for travel between March 1 and June 30, 2013. I've never traveled with this carrier so can't comment on the service.
Air Berlin is the second largest airline in Germany, and is flying about 135 airplanes. Chances are any flights to and from the U.S. would be on either American Airlines or British Airways. Connecting flights within Europe may be on their own airplanes, however. I wouldn't be afraid of the service on this airline. If the price is right, and the flight times are agreeable, go for it.
Just to add some add'l info. Air Berlin does fly from US to Europe; for instance from Chicago to Berlin. Speaking of Chicago to Germany... fyi - I see flights on other airlines in May (United / Lufthansa) from Chicago to either Dusseldorf or Berlin for around $650 round trip!
$650? Somebody better grab'em quick. The bargains are going to come fast and leave fast.
What do you mean by " chances are flights to or from the US will be on British Airways or American Airlines?"
Yes, Air Berlin is now part of the OneWorld Alliance. Other members with flights to the US include British Air, Iberia and American. Air Berlin does have some nonstop service from the US to Europe; my positive review of my Air Berlin flight from JFK to TXL is on the Helpline, here. If you do a search, lots of other threads about them come up (almost all positive, BTW). OneWorld is one of the three big airline alliances, the other two being Star Alliance and Skyteam. I snagged a sale for my Air Berlin flight referenced above. If anyone can take advantage of this current sale, but is hesitating, don't - pounce NOW!
Their service is much better than e.g. Lufthansa's. Their long-haul Airbus A330s are brand new and come with inseat-entertainment and everything else you'd need. Even their intra-European flights on the Boeing 737s and A320s are great. If the flight time is under 90 minutes you get free coffee, tea or soft drinks plus a small pack of chips or cookies or waffles. If the flight time is between 90 minutes and 4 hours you get that, too, plus you can buy hot meals including a Currywurst made by the famous Sansibar on Sylt island. I strongly recommend it.
Sasha,
We are using FF miles Tulsa to Rome and the flights include American to Chicago, then AA to Frankfort where we are scheduled on Air Berlin to Rome. I think that American has a code share, or whatever it's called, with Air Berlin.
