Air Travel from Ireland to Scotland

We will be in Connemara prior to a trip to Scotland. Should we use Galway, Shannon or Dublin for the flight to Edinburg Scotland? Unfortunately we will have a total of three large bags to check and are concerned about using RyanAir. Any recommendations for Airlines and departure places?

From Dublin to Edinburgh you can fly Ryanair or Aer Lingus

From Shannon to Edinburgh you can fly Ryanair

From Galway to Edinburgh you can fly Aer Arann

From Cork to Edinburgh you can fly Aer Arann

Ryanair and Aer Lingus both charge baggage fees. Aer Arann does not.

I think RyanAir is the only airline that flies Shannon-Edinburgh so if you want to avoid them I think Shannon's out. Looks like your other choices are Aer Lingus from Dublin or Aer Arann from Galway.

To be honest, on a hop this short I wouldn't bother too much what airline I took. None are particularly comfortable in economy and the route's too short for proper biz class. I'd pick which ever had the cheapest tickets on an itinerary that worked for me.

BTW what are your concerns with RyanAir? Just in case they may affect other airline too.

The reason I was concerned with Ryan Air had to do with an earlier post which indicated that Ryan Air only allows one bag. Perhaps that is not the case and we could just pay for the extra bag?

Here are Ryanair's baggage allowances:

Checked baggage.

Cabin baggage.

I'm not sure if they'll fit your needs.

People often complain that Ryanair (and other LCCs) have lots of rules or try to "nickel and dime" you which is true to an extent; but one thing I like about them is that they make their terms very clear on the web. They can be relied upon to enforce their own restrictions so as long as you read and follow them you should be fine.

Just to add, it would be wise to double check the allowances on any other airline you are thinking of as they tend to be broadly similar on intra-European flights.

Barbara, Ryan air is not the only one who has a strict baggage allowance. This could be a good reason to pack lighter and less... and keep it to one small suitcase (22 inch) and maybe a backpack for the carry on.

The airlines are allowing one carry on, and they do mean ONE.

Reexamine your packing list, and bring what you need. You'll be happier, not just at the airport, but when you're going from destination to destination.

Aer Arann definitely charges for baggage. Their limits are very strict. Checked baggage is 15kgs per passenger (~33 pounds). Every kilo (~2.2 pounds) over is charged 8 Euros or 6.5 British pounds. Carry-on baggage is limited to that which can fit under the seat--much smaller than American carry on limits. The weight limit is 7 kilograms (~15.4 pounds) per passenger and around 8 inches X 11 inches X 17 inches. Check out their web site for more restrictions.
