Air Travel from Detroit, US to Ljubjana, Slovenia

Our tour starts in Ljubjana, but I am having trouble finding reasonable airfare to that city. Would it be best to fly to Zagreb, Croatia or another city and take ground transportation to Ljubljana?

Also, tour ends in Dubrovnik, Croatia - another tough connection. Any suggestions about returning home from Croatia? I'm trying to avoid a 16 hour layover on the way home.

Tour is August 30 - Sept. 12, 2015 if that matters.

Thanks for any help,

Sandy

sluetke,

I assume you're referring to the RS Adriatic tour? I took that tour in September, so travelled the same routes you're planning.

You might consider flying inbound to Munich as there are a few direct trains from there to Ljubljana every day (travel time about 6 hours), and others with one change. I always like to arrive a few days prior to the tour to get over jet lag, and Munich would be a good place to spend a few days.

Another option from Munich to Ljubljana would be to take the GoOpti Shuttle. I looked at that but felt the train was a simpler and more direct method.

Getting out of Dubrovnik at the end of the tour can be a bit challenging (especially as there are no rail connections there). The method I used was a flight with Croatia Air to Zürich and I headed into Italy after the tour (that was actually two flights - first to Zagreb and then on to Zürich). You should be able to find a good choice of flights from Zürich to Detroit. Zürich is a very easy airport to use, as it's only about 10 minutes by train from the city.

Suggest you identify the prime and other airports in the region that interest you and then search the related airport websites to learn of various flights. Many permutations as to open jaw tickets or a r/t ticket to one airport with connections to actual destinations via trains or planes. What is logical to you is not always the same as reality.

Just enter your departure city and your destination on the Rome2Rio site. It should give you all the options, but you'll need to pick each one in turn to see how many flight changes etc. are involved, and that can vary by day of the week, so add your date of departure in too.
