Air France quality and options

Hello all: happy travels! Went through 10 pages of posts and did not see this question: Question for all of you: I am planing but not bought ticket yet, on Air France either from DTW to Paris or from JFK to Paris in November. Will be flying coach/voyager only. I would like to know your opinions on AF as I have never flown on them before and get really mixed reviews. First, is this an airline that should be skipped like US Airways or should it be flown? For the equipment: form DTW paris: it will be A340
-if anyone can answer: how are the seats? are they comfortable, are the pitch and width good? How is the cabin service? On the way back it will be an A340 as well. Being comfortable is the most important question. For JFK to paris: it will be a 777. Same questions, are the seats comfortable? Good plane? Since it is a 777 with 3 seatings, does one feel squished? Thanks again as I plan on purchasing the tickets in the next week and would appreciate any comments on this!

Check out flyertalk.com. Go to the forums tab and then airline programs tab and then AirFrance. Read through the threads for answers to your questions or start a new thread. Everyone is very knowledgeable and helpful on that site. They tend to argue amongst themselves but are helpful, nonetheless.

Jonathan - you can also check out seat guru.com to see plane configuration.

I really like Air France. Flying steerage is always pretty awful, but Air France is less so. Seating configurations - yes, you should check those out on-line. I like Skytrax: http://www.airlinequality.com/ you can plug in your seat number and plane and get information. That being said, from a non-technical perspective, I have felt less hideously cramped on AF. IMHO, the food is better than Delta or Continental (may not be saying much, but I have always been pleasnatly surprised). And the wine is free, which goes a long way to easing the pain of economy class. I have always found the cabin service to be superior to other carriers. For reference - I am a larger person, a tad claustrophobic, with loooong legs.

Whenever I travel to europe from LAX I use Air France which has good service, good food and just a quality airline. I used to use UAL however they messed up my seat assignments X2 in business class giving us less desirable seats although I paid for these seats. In addition UAL to CDG required a stop in Chicago or DC.
In europe going form CDG to another european country I try to fly AF.

Hi Jonathan, I have been flying Air France for a number of years and have good experiences with this carrier. Admittedly when things go wrong like delays or lost luggage at CDG Paris, their service is not always very perfect!
However, on board the plane, inflight catering is nice - I think better an a US carrier - (free champagne!) and courteous service, but seating in coach on A340 feels far more comfy than on their B777 where I really felt crammed I have to say (3-4-3 layout on 777-300). But I am also a tall person! Try to prebook an aisle set if possible. As you enter the aircraft, you'll pass by both the Business and Premium Voyager classes. Premium Voyager is Air France's new Premium Economy class and is much worth a try, but comes at almost double the price. Bon voyage!

hey thanks all for your reply: I think I am going with AF, most likely on a340 or even the a380. But I now have a follow up. i have read in different forums that there are known issues in reserving seats with AF if booked at its skymiles partners. Does anyone have advice where i should book the tickets in order to make sure I get the seats i choose? One other thing, I have noticed that af.com site does not show all of the options including the connecting flight via dtw. klm offers this for the same price as finding elsewhere, with seats availalbe. Should it be booked on their site? thanks!

Seat reservations these days have indeed become more tricky than ever and is often levied at a fee now! For my part, having flown AF/KLM for years, I have (almost) always reserved and booked my tickets under klm.com because I find their booking tool far superior and user friendly than af.com. Once you have found your flights, say with AF via JFK on the A380 to CDG, paid and booked, then go back to the klm website, click the blue folder "manage my booking", and here as you scroll down you should be able to select your seat, even though the flight is operated by AF. If this did not work to me, I simply called AF in Paris and never found trouble in getting assistance. Hope you will experience the same in the U.S. And definitely give the A380 a try!
