The same thing happens to US airlines on Oct 1, when the requirements related to the current airline bailout expire... UNLESS... the politicians perceive mass furloughing of airline workers 5 weeks before an election to be a bad thing. They will. Expect airline bailout 2.0.

I think customer service representatives were the first workers Air Canada laid off.
