We checked the carryon baggage restrictions on Air Berlin and were surprised to see it was only 6kg per person for carryon (8kg with laptop). Does anyone have experience with Air Berlin and know if they really enforce that?

In general if planes are full they enforce. Best plan accordingly.
Airlines are using it also as a revenue source.

We've flown Air Berlin several times and they've never checked our bags weight but you may have a different experience.
