I'm planning to purchase the 8 day Swiss Travel Pass (only using it 7 days but not sure what else to do). After Switzerland travels I plan to go from Lauterbrunnen to Salzburg then on to Vienna. At what point in the Lauterbrunnen-Salzburg trip will I need to have pre-purchased a ticket to Salzburg and Vienna separately from the Swiss pass? Where should I purchase it?
thank you
Buchs (SG)
- This is the last Swiss station, the last station your Swiss Pass will be valid.
You can see this on the Swiss Pass validity map: https://www.sbb.ch/content/dam/sbb/de/infotexte/uebersichtskarte-sts.pdf
Buchs (SG) is next to the Austrian border, where the red line (pass valid) changes to grey (pass invalid)
Buy a ticket from Buchs (SG) to Salzburg on the ÖBB (Austrian Railways) website: https://www.oebb.at/en/
This ticket will only be valid on the train listed on the ticket. You do not need to get off the train in Buchs, but when you get on (in Zürich), make sure it is the train for which you have your ticket from Buchs.
Useless fact: After Buchs the train goes via Liechtenstein before Austria, but doesn't stop there. Between Kufstein and Salzburg it goes through Germany, but also does not stop there.
Thank you Chris! Since the ticket is train-specific, can I just book when i get to the Zurich station (since I'm not sure of the timing getting to Zurich from Laut., nor of what train Ill then be boarding Zurich-Salz)? Are there kiosks where I can do that at Zurich?
Yes, you can buy a ticket at Zürich (or any other station). However Austrian trains (unlike Swiss) give big discounts for buying in advance. That is why it is advisable to buy your ticket from Buchs to Salzburg, and from there to Vienna, as soon as possible on the ÖBB website.
- What I suggest you do is go to the SBB (Swiss railways) website: https://www.sbb.ch/en/ and look up trains from Lauterbrunen to Salzburg for your desired date and time.
- Click on the option you want, and it will show all the individual trains and where you change (for example: Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken Ost, Interlaken Ost to Bern, Bern to Zürich HB and Zürich HB to Salzburg Hbf).
- On the last train (Zürich to Salzburg), click on the '+'. This will then show all the individual stops, and times at those stops. Note the time at Buchs SG.
- Then go to the ÖBB website ( https://www.oebb.at/en/ ) and look up from Buchs SG to Salzburg for that time. You will then see the same train, and can buy tickets for it.
The trains are branded "Railjet", and they run every 2 hours: Zürich HB - Buchs SG - Feldkirch - Innsbruck - Salzburg - Linz - Wien (Vienna), plus other stops as well.
Your ÖBB ticket will be "self-print".
Of course you can buy tickets at Zurich station on your day of travel. It will just cost you more money. A flexible (walk-up) ticket price from Buchs SG to Salzburg is 65.30 EUR. But looking out to July, you can buy a nonrefundable train specific ticket now for 24.90 EUR. Train tickets are now sold like airline tickets. You can go to the airport now and give them your credit card and tell them "Put me on the next plane to X." and they will do it. But at what price? Hardly anybody does that any more, unless someone else is paying for it.
THANK YOU!!! Will follow this great advice and buy in advance.
