Any one done an african safari trip recently researching a few ideas for this years travel.. tips , expense , etc?

You might try your questions on tripadvisor.com, Cape Town or Johannesburg forums. Photo safaris are much less expensive than actual hunting safaris. None of them are cheap but you can travel to say Cape Town, and find a day trip photo safari based there. All manner of bush camps are available depending on your needs -- photos or hunting. Check out twooceanssportfishing.com in South Africa for assistance and adventures.

I haven't been recently, but we made our arrangements for a trip to South Africa and Botswana through Fish Eagle Safaris. They were recommended by a friend who had previously used them. Bert Duplessis did an excellent job of working with us to put together a custom package with time in Cape Town plus visits to three camps in different parts of Botswana. Also try Kensington Tours. We have travelled with them and they have excellent guides and provide a wonderful experience.
