any advice for first time travelers to Europe on affordable travel OW from Florence to Lyon or Nice?

The Trenitalia site only shows timetables and fares for routes within Italy and for trains that go directly from Italy to a neighboring country without having to change trains at the border.
To see complete timetables, go to www.bahn.de. Click on the drop-down flag menu for English. After you get summary timetables for Firenze (Florence)-Nice, click on the arrow to the left of each departure time to see the connecting points. Do the same for Firenze-Lyon.
For Firenze-Nice, use the departure times you found on the DB site and enter them on the Trenitalia site to get fares for Firenze-Ventimiglia. Use the departure times you found on the DB site and go to www.tgv-europe.com to get fares for Ventimiglia-Nice. To keep the site in English and to avoid being bumped to the Rail Europe site, choose Great Britain as your country of residence.
For Firenze-Lyon you may need to use the Swiss Rail site as well as the Trenitalia site and tgv-europe.com.
