Affordable airline tickets, flying to London.

Hi y'all. Will American Airlines' prices for airline tickets for flying from the U.S.A. to London (LHR airport), for travel during their "off season", become lower during this winter ? Today I looked at the Website of American Airlines : the minimum price for flying from Tampa Florida to London (U.K.) in May of 2010 (before May 15), travelling on a Tuesday and a Thursday, is $ 1060. (U.S.Dollars) (includes Tax and airport fees and all fees) for the round trip. I thought that is the price for flying during the "High Season" (the summer months). Flying to London from Florida should cost less money than flying to London from states that are located farther to the West.
I must fly with American Airlines, because I have credit with that Airline. Edit : January 9, the lowest price for American Airline tickets, that I saw, for flying to London during April or May, is $ 997.50. I think that price is too high. I did not buy airline tickets, yet. I appreciate your replies.

Go into "Classic view" and scan down a couple of posts for a discussion on this very topic over the past couple of days....hints on where to look for fares, and how to sign up for computer alerts to tell you when fares drop. No one can predict whether the fares will go up or down...so just keep and eye on trends and grab something when it feels comfortable.

Am readying for my first international trip in Feb/Mar 2010. I'm using http://kayak.com for pricing airfare. You can set up multiple dates/departure points and then set email alerts (daily/weekly) to notify you of fares (up/down). I'm finding it very helpful. Site checks multiple airlines and booking sites (expedia, travelocity).

In general (based on broad trends in past years) you may see prices start to go down in the February timeframe for May flights, so you are maybe a little early to see deals. You complicate things by restricting to a certain airline, maybe passing up a deal, or waiting for a deal that won't come. As for geographical distance, yes, that does play a role, in general east coast flights are cheaper than west coast, but choice of Airport makes a big difference. As a comparision, try comparing Orlando with Tampa, there may be a significant difference.

Don't get hung up on just flying to London. Check AMS, CDG, or any of the other cities in the UK they fly to. Then it's an easy train ride or flight from those portals to one of the London airports.
Besides, if going to Heathrow, don't check any bags!

Ron,

You could also check flights to Gatwick (if American Airlines uses that airport?). I always prefer LGW when going to London. I've also used Manchester on past occasions (when the trip was starting in Yorkshire or the north).

Happy travels!

British Airways has a direct from TPA to Gatwick 5 times a week that you may want to look into. We were lucky enough to get a few nights in London for free in the past making it an even more appealing option, and there's something to be said for not having to change planes in the US... it makes me feel like I am on vacation already :)

How many miles do you have? BA is a partner for freq flier miles EXCEPT in the case of transaltantic flights. Kind of lame if you asked me, unless you are stuck via work with AA as preferred carrier.

Might be better for the long term moving to a Star Alliance Partner program.

I appreciate all of the replies. I got my American Airlines flight reservations, today. For flying from Tampa International Airport (in Florida) to London Heathrow Airport (in the United Kingdom). The Total price is $ 654.30 (U.S. Dollars). That price was advertised at the internet website of American Airlines, only. (That price is not available from an American Airlines ticket agent on the Telephone, or at American Airlines check-in counters (Ticketing counters) at airports. I found that price by doing "Date Range" searches, for every day in March, and every day in April, at that website. Only one flight departure date was available, at that price. That date is in the first week of March.. Yesterday the price was $ 649. The lowest price I saw was $ 635. (At the price of $ 635. I did not like the flight arrival time at Tampa).

I think that price of $ 654. is high, for flying from Florida to England during the winter. But, recently I was told : this year (2010) the prices for airline tickets are 50 percent higher than the prices were in the year 2008. (In the year 2009, airline ticket prices were abnormally low, for travel dates earlier than June. I was not able to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in 2009, because of my other activities).
For my trip to and from London (in March), I like all of my Flight departure times and Flight arrival times. :-)(Going to London airport, I will transfer to an other airplane at New York JFK. Going from London airport to Tampa, I will transfer to an other airplane at Dallas/Fort Worth. I will have plenty of time for getting to those connecting flights). I decided to not do baggage check-in. And I got all of the seat numbers (in the airplanes) that I requested : for me to be seated at aisle seats located at the front of the coach section :-)
